Hi! I’m writing to let you know why you haven’t heard from me in a while.
Yes, it’s not unlike me to be quiet for weeks, but this time it’s different. Something happened.
My blog was hacked and infected with malware. Since about a month ago, visitors were being re-directed to a website that gave a false warning and asked them to download some sort of software.
I wasn’t sure how this happened or what I should do, plus I had just returned from five months of travel and had a million and one things to do.
Naturally, I wanted to prevent any of my readers and visitors to my site from falling prey to what obviously seemed a scam. So, I put a block on the site, to buy myself some time while I figured things out. Now, anyone wanting to visit was prevented from doing so, as the entire site was password protected.
After doing some research, it became clear that I would need to spend hundreds of dollars on expert’s fees to have the malware cleaned out. And even then, at least in my mind, there was no guarantee that it would be rendered safe.
So I closed down the hosting package and deleted this blog and everything else I had on that shared hosting plan. I then set up a brand new site on a new hosting package with security and all the bells and whistles…
Starting from scratch
I had often wanted to start from scratch. Well, this was my sure sign that it was time. And so here we are – a brand new beginning. I’m super excited and I’m reveling in the freedom!
The old blog posts
I managed to import the old posts to a new site I set up on WordPress.com. So you can view the old content there.
It’s hosted by Worpress.com, and I’m sure they have bulletproof malware protection installed. Besides, I only imported the posts – none of the code that actually runs the site and none of the ‘plugins’.
Since this is a new beginning, I am not going to re-publish the old posts back on this blog… But I will bring back the one I wrote about my brother Jani because people keep returning and referring back to that post a lot. Even so, it won’t have any of the old comments.
I may re-work some of the old stuff and publish them here as new posts, but that’s as far it’s likely to go. Everything else is going to be brand spanking new!!
Staying in touch
This experience taught me many things and I have taken them all on board to make something better for myself and my readers.
I’ve placed a lot more emphasis on security – something I have neglected in the past. But there is still one thing that I need to address and that’s setting up an easy way to stay in touch with my readers.
Not everyone is on social media and if the blog was every to be infected again (most unlikely) or if it was ever down for some reason, I wouldn’t be able to reach you. So, I’d like to ask you all to consider signing up to my email list. You will only receive future blog posts and this way, I could send out a message via email even if I can’t publish any new posts.
For those of you signed up on RSS or WordPress, please consider joining the official email list as I would still need to publish a post to get in touch with you.
You can sign up using the email subscription box at the top of every page. Simply enter your email address in the space provided and click ‘submit’. You will receive a confirmation email with a clickable link asking you to confirm your subscription. Once you click that link, you’re all set to go! You can unsubscribe at any point and every email you receive will contain a link giving you the option to unsubscribe.
For the five or so years I ran this blog, it was more of a hobby than anything else. But now, things have changed. I realised how much I really want to do this ‘properly’ and how much it, and all of you, mean to me.
I want to give it a lot more of my time and attention now and pour a lot more of myself into it.
It’s time to turn pro.
I made a decision to release all my posts and material from copyright. This blog and its contents are therefore now in the public domain.
My reasons for this decision are many, but most importantly, I did it because I think copyright is outmoded and not helpful to the free exchange or ideas or to building a better world.
You can read more about it here.
The road ahead
So what lies ahead? Well, I still have a few finishing touches to add (like re-publishing the Jani post). Please bear with me while I finish up these tasks.
In terms of content, I have a clearer idea of what I’d like to focus on. It’s going to be a little bit different perhaps, to what you might have come to expect from me. Also, the format might be different… I think there will be more ‘list posts’; ‘how to’ posts and a mixture of short and long-form posts.
Of course, I’m also always happy to hear from you about what you’d like any ideas or help with. So please let me know in the comments or by getting in touch with me.
In the past, I held myself back because of numerous fears and also because I wanted to project a certain version of myself. No more. I don’t want to hold back anymore or let fear dictate what I do and don’t say. So please be prepared to see the ‘real’ me! : )
Last but not least, a massive thank you to all of you, for being there and for your support.
I love you all and am so glad you’re here!
