Why change? Change is scary. For many, it feels downright impossible. They feel trapped where they are. Their minds are full of all the reasons why they can’t do it and why it would be foolish to even try. Everyone they know seems happy enough to be doing what they are doing – all content with the same things. So they question: ‘Who am I to want more?’
Well, who are you, not to?
You are the unique child of an omnipotent God(dess), cast in Her own image – with all that same God Force and Power within you.
You are the wonderful creation of a limitless Universe, bursting with power and possibility at every moment.
So who are you, not to?
So who are you, not to answer your soul’s calling? Who are you, not to fulfill your true potential? Who are you, not to make your dreams a reality? And who are you, not to leave this world a better place, if through nothing else but your example and the way in which you lived your life? Who are you, not to inspire others by showing them that it is a good thing to be true to yourself and go after what you really want in life – even if you never make it?
The question isn’t ‘Why change?’ or ‘How is it possible to change or accomplish something?’ The real question is ‘How can you stay the same when you know you want to change?’ How can you settle for something which is less than what you really want?
How can you choose to stay where you are when there are endless possibilities and opportunities out there?
The answer is always the same: It’s not that it’s impossible. Nothing ever is. It’s just that we’re too afraid to try.
The reasons for our fear are numerous:
- We might not believe that we can pull it off… and we think that we’ll be worse off if we tried and failed. It feels somehow safer to stay as we are;
- We don’t want to stand out from the crowd and invite scrutiny or ruffle anyone’s feathers;
- We don’t want to be the odd ones out, or to isolate ourselves (because we want to belong and feel safer being accepted and being part of the crowd); and
- We don’t want anyone else to see us fail.
But these should be the very last reasons in the world to stop us! They may seem big and scary – when viewed through the lens of our subjective fears, but in the cold light of reality, they are puny and worthless. They are like the mist – all appearance and no real substance.
Would you be put off by the mist, or would you choose to walk through it, confident in the knowledge that it must and it will dissolve in the face of your advancement? Well so too will your phantom fears!
If you don’t believe me, ask anyone you look up to – anyone who has ever accomplished anything in life that you too might like to accomplish – and they will tell you. They didn’t have all the answers when they first set out. They didn’t know anything for sure except that they had to give it their best shot. Nobody had any guarantees. But they didn’t let that stop them. They didn’t listen to their fears. And because of that, they made it.
As for our fear of failure, we would do well to remind ourselves that no one who ever tried, and kept on trying, ever fails. We only fail if we give up. And if we don’t give up, then victory is always inevitable.
Even if we die trying or before we manage to pull it off, we can take comfort in the knowledge that we did something worthwhile with our lives. We’ll be remembered as someone who didn’t back down or settle for less. That’s better than being remembered as someone who never had the guts to even try.
We can listen to our minds and rationalisations – all the good reasons for staying as we are. We can listen to others and play it safe. But we are only kidding ourselves if we believe that any of this will ever bring us true peace or happiness.
The truth is, you can never really lie to yourself – your soul will never stop telling you when you have sold yourself short or settled for less. Your soul will never stop calling you home to your truth.
The truth will always gnaw away at us. And even if we make it all the way through life in denial, regret will still haunt us – even when we’re on our deathbeds.
So why change? Because change is our only real option. And, the great news is that it’s never too late for any of us to change!
