When you want to start and you’re scared, start anyway.
Tell yourself that you are going to do this. Make a commitment to yourself. Tell yourself that you will do something – no matter how small – towards this one thing, every single day. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Every day no matter what. No excuses at all. None.
Make a start. Start small. Take one step: write just one sentence; do just one push up; make just one dollar. Do what you can do. But do it. Do it without fail. Do it every single day.
Don’t worry about results. Your goal is not the result.
Your goal is to honour your commitment. Your goal is to show yourself that you can keep your word to yourself. Your goal is to show yourself that you care about yourself and how you feel. Your goal is to show yourself that you matter. Your goal is to be proud of yourself for keeping your word.
Don’t worry about comparing yourself to others. Wish them well, but move on. This is about you and you – nobody else. The time you spend looking over your shoulder at others is precious time you could be investing in yourself. It’s your choice. Be smart about it.
If you go off track or make a mistake, correct course and keep going. Start all over again if you must. But remember your promise. Remember your commitment to yourself. Get back on track and keep going.
If you skip a day (it happens) get back on track the very next day. Forget about the missed day – put it behind you. Just remember your commitment and keep going.
When it gets to the point where you’ve been doing it for at least a month, challenge yourself to do even more. Challenge yourself to do better. Amp up your game. Make small increments. Do it in small, baby steps. Keep going.
Keep track of your wins – the things that make you feel glad you started. Celebrate them by telling yourself how happy and proud you are of yourself. Thank yourself for keeping to your word. Thank yourself for making an effort about something that means so much to you.
Remember the result you wanted? It’s coming. The result will happen when the time is right. Just keep going.
One day, when you get there, you will realise that it wasn’t about the result at all.
It was about the person you became.
