Art is about feeling; about emotion.
Yes, it is also about creativity, but to be an artist you have to be more than just creative. You have to be sensitive; you have to feel, and you have to care. You have to be driven, and you might have to be just a little bit crazy and irrational too.
If there was one word that epitomises true artists and their art, that word would have to be ‘passion’.
Passion is what underlies everything else. Passion is what makes you want to do what you do. Passion is why you would do it even if no one was watching and if no one else cared. Passion is what keeps you from never giving up – even though you want to, every single day. Passion is what drives you to make art and it is what makes you an artist.
Passion is your blessing and it is also your curse. While passion lives inside of you, you have no choice but to continue to serve it. Because you know only too well the hollow, empty feeling you get when you try to ignore your calling – and you never ever want to have to face that!
So passion is the biggie, and if you’re lucky enough to be driven by it, you might as well face the fact and do whatever you can… You don’t have to quit your day job and take up painting. You just have to make time for your passion – even though you have a day job and maybe even a family to care for.
But art isn’t the only thing which requires passion. Life requires passion too. And if you’re living life without passion – if you’re ignoring the longings of your heart and soul; if you’re not driven by something more than mere survival – then you’re not really living. You’re just dying.
So passion is the biggie… And you have to do whatever you can…
